Thyroid disease treatment aims to restore normal blood levels.

  • Levothyroxine is a medication that treats hypothyroidism. This synthetic hormone tablet replaces the thyroid hormone that is missing from the body. The doctor adjusts the dose to suit the patient’s condition, so they can quickly return to their normal life.
  • Hyperthyroidism can be difficult to treat. Treatment may include medication to stop the production of the hormone. It contains propyltiouracil and methimazole (Tapazole).
  • Radioactive iodine treatment can also inactivate the thyroid. This medicine is used to lower the thyroid level. It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months.
  • Thyroid surgery can remove any part of the gland.
