Proteins are an important part of the human body because they are the building blocks of tissues. Proteins can also be used as energy sources for our daily activities.

The amount of protein that our bodies can use is called protein bioavailability. If a particular type of protein is easy to digest, absorb and convert into other essential proteins, it is considered high bioavailability.

A healthy diet with enough protein can improve our overall health. It serves many functions, including strengthening immunity, maintaining cell structure and hormone functioning, maintaining organ structure, and overall growth and development.

Both plants and animals can provide enough protein. It is highly debateable which source of protein is best.

For the production of proteins, twenty amino acids are required. Nine of these twenty amino acids are not produced by the body. The term “essential amino acids” refers to these nine amino acids.

Complete protein sources are those that contain all nine essential amino acid. While some plant proteins can be considered complete, others are incomplete. Combining these plant proteins can meet our bodies’ needs.

Protein-rich sources

The bioavailability principle of protein means that there are many protein sources available for our bodies to meet our protein needs.

  • Animal protein sources

Some animal protein sources may not contain essential proteins. These are some of the richest sources for animal protein:

  • Eggs and poultry meat
  • Lean meat
  • Turkey
  • Seafood and fishes like salmon, oysters, etc.
  • Milk and dairy products like yoghurt, cheese and yogurt

Consuming processed animal products, such as chicken nuggets or dried seafood, is not a good idea as they can have negative health effects.

  • Plant protein sources

Many plants are high in protein, and can meet our daily needs.

  • Soybean products like tofu and edamame
  • Peanuts are a good example of nuts.
  • Beans and legumes
  • Ezekiel bread
  • Quinoa
  • Buckwheat
  • Hemp seeds and chia seeds
  • Spirulina
  • Wild rice
  • Nutritional yeast

A varied diet can provide the protein we need. A varied diet can lower the risk of developing many diseases. Good protein sources can help you stay fit and healthy.
