Career of Dr. Alimi Abdulrazaq

Dr. Alimi takes the place of his father Alhaji AbdulGaniyu AbdulRazaq (SAN, OFR), who was a celebrated lawyer from Northern Nigeria and former Chairman of the Nigerian Body of Benchers. He also served as the longest-serving Mutawalli of Ilorin, who died in 2020.

Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq (DAA), was a privilege child who, according to his own words “learned the virtues of modesty and prudent attitude, honesty. humility. good disposition. patriotism. and truthful perseverance” from his father.

He is the quiet, humble type. He is a man of great simplicity, with a refined taste in clothes.

Mutawalli, Chancellor of Exchequer and Minister of Finance, is one of Ilorin Emirate’s most revered royal titles.

The celebrations grew louder than ever before, and Kwara’s capital city is literally agog for the turbanning by His Eminence, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari CFR, the Emir of Ilorin.

Dr. Alimi takes the place of his father Alhaji AbdulGaniyu AbdulRazaq (SAN, OFR), who was the first lawyer to come from Northern Nigeria and former Chairman of the Nigerian Body of Benchers. He also served as the Mutawalli of Ilorin for the longest time, until his death in 2020.

Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq can be described as uniquely Kwaran. His first name, Alimi has an important historical significance in Ilorin Emirate. AbdulRazaq is his surname and it’s a well-known family name in Northern Nigeria.

Mutawalli, the new Mutawalli, is an accomplished lawyer, politician, entrepreneur, key corporate player and a prominent public servant. He is also a noted community leader and affable Nigerian patriot.

Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq (DAA), was a privilege child who, according to his own words “learned the virtues of modesty and prudent attitude, honesty. humility. good disposition. patriotism. and truthful perseverance” from his father.

DAA is AGF in a new millennial outfit. Dr. Alimi is an old-timer in law, education, politics, and public service.

As a Harvard alumnus and a legal scholar, Dr. Alimi was first exposed to the basics of law practice. He was 12 years old when he began following his famous lawyer father to court.

He does not hide the fact his father, who was one of the earliest beneficiaries of the prestigious Senior Advocate of Nigeria award (SAN), influenced his choice of law practice and study of law.

DAA joined his family’s law firm House of Law, which was founded by AGF. He became the managing partner.

AGF invested in education, quality education – both for his children and as public service. Ilorin College, Ilorin, established by the late patriarch in 1955 as the first Kwara private secondary school (and some say in Nigeria), but is now called Ilorin Grammar School, (IGS) after the takeover by the government. It’s now an iroko tree within Kwara’s education establishment.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Alimi founded the famed Bridge College, Ikoyi. Alimi’s younger brother Mallam Isiaka AbdulRazaq is the owner of the Regents School in Abuja, a renowned secondary school in Nigeria.

While politics is a part of the family, the public service component is stronger. AGF was a great political leader and general in public service. AGF was a commissioner in the former Kwara state, Member of the federal cabinet as Minister of State Transport of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other public service engagements.

Dr. Alimi did not hold any elected office. He actually ran for governor of Kwara State in 1999, but was defeated by Admiral Muhammed Alal. However, he was an important stakeholder in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which ended its 16-year-long reign as Nigeria’s most flamboyant party in 2015.

In the public service, Dr. Alimi was Commissioner for Legal Licensing & Enforcement of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Chairman, National Iron Ore Mining Company Itakpe, and Member, National Council on Privatization.

His late father, Mutawalli, was a successful corporate player in Nigeria. He was Chairman in Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), President of NSE and Chairman of the Capital Issues Commission. He is the Chairman of Forte Upstream Services Limited, and was recently elected as a non-executive director to the Board at First Bank Holdings PLC.

Dr. Alimi is an unassuming hero of OtoGe’s revolution in Kwara State. He was the go-to for OtoGe movement, hosting several strategy sessions at his GRA, Ilorin residence.

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq achieved what Dr. Alimi failed in 1999. AbdulRahman was elected 6th Governor of Kwara State in 2019.

Although Dr. Alimi does not direct the governance of Kwara State’s affairs, he will let you know that the governor is in charge as any governor should. His guiding hand in policy and political matters cannot be denied. He is the unobstructive Godfather.

Hajia SaadatuModibbokawu, APC Chieftain, Honourable Commissioner, Education, Kwara State vividly captures DAA’s mantra: “Dr. Alimi is a father figure. He is a great crisis manager. His calm and steady demeanour make him a true role model.

DAA is reluctant to give interviews to the media and avoids public engagements. Three years ago, in rare moments of candour, he spoke out to the media about his biggest challenge: living up to his father’s high-achieving status.

Mutawalli’s father is a significant step in this direction. The AGF legacy lives on.
